The work was purchased for £400 from a Nantwich, Cheshire, antiques shop some years previously Father Jamie MacLeod and hung in the Whaley Hall Ecumenical Retreat House, which he runs, at Whaley Bridge. This sensitive portrait of a young girl – whose identity remains tantalizingly unknown – is a recent addition to Sir Anthony Van Dyck’s oeuvre and is a superb example of his skills as painter of children.
